This is the official Privacy Policy for the Delineation mobile application, operated by Foundational Enterprise Solutions LLC. It is identical to the version shown inside the app.
This Privacy Policy explains how Foundational Enterprise Solutions LLC ("Delineation," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information in connection with the Delineation mobile application and related services (the "Service"). The Service is intended only for residents of the United States who are at least 18 years old. It is not directed to or intended for individuals located outside the United States, and we do not offer the Service subject to the European Union's GDPR or other non-U.S. data-protection regimes. By using the Service, you agree to this Policy.
• Account information: your email address, a hashed password, username, and display name.
• Profile and location: your United States city, state, and ZIP code, and optional details such as a bio, profile photo, and social-media links (Instagram, X/Twitter, TikTok, Facebook).
• Content you create: reviews and ratings, community comments, incident reports, photos and videos, direct messages, favorites, support requests, and feedback.
• Precise location: if you grant location permission, your device's GPS coordinates, used to sort results by distance.
• Photo metadata: photos and videos you upload may contain embedded information such as the date, device, and the location where they were taken. See Section 8.
• Community self-identification: if you choose to provide it, a self-attestation about your ancestry or community membership, and business attributes such as whether a business is Black-owned or Black-operated. See Section 7.
• Payment information: if you make a purchase, our payment processor collects your card details directly. We receive a customer and subscription identifier and the status of your payment — never your full card number.
• Civic and donation submissions: information you submit about community donations.
• Device information: push-notification tokens, if you enable notifications.
• Network information: your IP address.
• Usage and diagnostic information: searches you perform, how you interact with the Service, and crash and error reports, used to operate and improve it.
• Google or Apple sign-in: if you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email address (or a private relay address), name where provided, and an account identifier.
We collect information directly from you when you register, complete your profile, or submit content; automatically as you use the Service (such as your IP address, device information, usage activity, and crash reports); from your device when you grant permission (such as location or photo access); and from Google or Apple if you choose to sign in with them.
We use information to: create and manage your account; provide, operate, and improve the Service; surface businesses relevant to your United States location; deliver notifications you opt into; verify that registration originates from within the United States; process payments and manage subscriptions; moderate content and enforce our Terms; prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents; diagnose crashes and errors; respond to support requests; and comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your information to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you, and we do not use community self-identification to deny anyone access to the Service.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only as follows:
• Service providers: vendors that host and operate the Service on our behalf (see Section 6).
• Legal and safety: when we believe disclosure is required by law or legal process, or is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of users, the public, or us. This includes responding to a valid subpoena or court order, which may require us to identify the author of a review or incident report.
• Business transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
• Public content: your username, profile, reviews, ratings, community comments, and any community badge you choose to display are public and visible to other users by design.
We rely on third-party providers, each of which receives only the data needed to perform its function. As of the date of this Policy these include:
• Hosting and infrastructure (Railway): operates the servers that run the Service and processes data passing through them.
• Cloud storage and database (Supabase, Amazon Web Services): stores your account data and the photos and videos you upload.
• Payments (Stripe): processes payments and subscriptions and collects your payment-card details directly.
• Email (Resend): sends transactional emails such as verification, password reset, and support replies.
• IP geolocation: we send your IP address to a geolocation provider to confirm that account registration originates from within the United States.
• Push notifications (Expo): delivers notifications to your device using a push token.
• Error monitoring (Sentry): receives crash and error reports, which include a user identifier and technical details about the failure.
• Product analytics (PostHog): receives usage events about how the app is used.
• Google and Apple: authenticate you if you choose to sign in with them.
• U.S. Census Bureau: we query public Census data by ZIP code to display neighborhood demographic information.
These providers are permitted to use the data only to provide services to us. This list may change as our vendors change; we will update it when it does.
The Service lets you voluntarily provide information connected to race, ethnicity, or ancestry — for example a self-attestation of descent from people enslaved in the United States, or a business attribute such as "Black-owned." Some privacy laws treat this as sensitive personal information.
Providing it is entirely optional. You can use the Service fully without it, and you can withdraw it at any time by contacting us at info@delineation.app or by editing your profile where the app allows.
If you provide it, we use it only to display the badge or attribute you asked us to display, to power the community filters the Service is built around, and to maintain the integrity of those attributes. We do not use it to profile you, to advertise to you, to infer anything else about you, or to deny you any service or benefit. We do not sell it or share it for advertising. It is not verified by us and is not a genealogical, ancestral, or legal determination.
Where a badge or attribute is shown publicly, that is because you asked us to publish it, and it will be visible to other users until you remove it or delete your account.
Your profile city, state, and ZIP code are stored and used to show relevant local businesses. You can change your stored location in the app (limited to once per year). Your IP address is used to confirm United States access as described above.
Precise location. If you grant location permission, your device's GPS coordinates are sent to our servers with your request so we can sort results by distance. We use them to compute that result and do not retain them as part of your profile or build a location history from them. They may appear transiently in ordinary server logs. You can turn location permission off at any time in your device settings; the Service still works without it.
Photo and video metadata. Photos and videos can carry embedded metadata, including the GPS coordinates of where they were taken. Before a photo leaves your device, the app re-saves it in a way that drops that embedded metadata, so the copy we store does not carry the location where the photo was taken. If that processing fails for a particular photo, we upload the original rather than lose your upload, so we cannot promise it succeeds every time. Videos are not processed this way and may still contain embedded location data, so consider removing it on your device before uploading a video taken somewhere private.
If you enable push notifications, we store a device push token to deliver them. You can control which categories you receive in the app's notification settings, and you can disable notifications entirely through your device settings.
We retain your information while your account is active. You may delete your account at any time in the app. When you delete your account:
• Your reviews and community comments are anonymized — detached from your name and profile — and retained to preserve the integrity of the community record.
• Your profile, personal information, direct messages, uploaded profile and review photos (including the underlying files), and other personal data are deleted.
Business photos and videos you uploaded to a business listing may remain associated with that business. We may retain limited records where we are required to for legal, tax, security, or fraud-prevention purposes, and backups are purged on a rolling basis. You can also download a copy of your data at any time using the in-app "Export My Data" feature.
You can:
• Access and update your account information in the app;
• Download a copy of your data via Profile → Export My Data;
• Delete your account and associated personal data through app settings;
• Withdraw any community self-identification you previously provided; and
• Opt out of push notifications through the app or your device.
To make a request you cannot complete in the app, contact us at info@delineation.app. We will verify your request using the email address associated with your account, and we will respond within the time required by applicable law. An authorized agent may submit a request on your behalf with your written permission. We will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or give you a lesser experience because you exercised a privacy right.
If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our response or writing to info@delineation.app with the subject "Privacy Appeal." We will inform you of the outcome and, where applicable, how to contact your state attorney general.
California residents may have specific rights. Under California's "Shine the Light" law (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.83), we do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct-marketing purposes. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act / California Privacy Rights Act, eligible residents may have the right to know what personal information we collect (the categories are described above — identifiers, account and profile data, commercial information, user content, internet and usage activity, geolocation, and sensitive personal information as described in Section 7), the right to delete it, the right to correct it, the right to limit our use of sensitive personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so we do not offer a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link. We use sensitive personal information only for the purposes described in Section 7, which are the purposes permitted without a separate right to limit. Some CCPA/CPRA obligations apply only to businesses that meet statutory thresholds, which we may not currently meet; regardless, we honor access, correction, and deletion requests as described in this Policy.
Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws — including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, and others as they take effect — may have rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a portable copy of their personal information, to opt out of targeted advertising, sale, or profiling, and to appeal a denied request. We do not conduct targeted advertising, sell personal information, or engage in profiling with legal effects. We honor verified requests from U.S. residents as described in Section 11. Contact us at info@delineation.app to make a request or an appeal.
The Service is intended for adults 18 and older and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, consistent with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If you believe someone under 18 has provided us with personal information, contact us at info@delineation.app and we will delete it and close the account.
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted transmission (HTTPS) and hashed storage of passwords. Direct messages are stored on our servers and are not end-to-end encrypted, which means we are technically able to access them — for example to respond to a report of abuse or a valid legal request. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.
We send transactional emails necessary to operate the Service, such as email verification, password resets, billing notices, and responses to your support requests. If we ever send promotional email, it will comply with the CAN-SPAM Act and include a way to unsubscribe; transactional messages may continue regardless.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you through the app. Changes are effective when posted or on a stated effective date, and your continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance.
